Just a quick question for the group. I was field stripping my new pistol for cleaning, after a very cold trip to the range, and the accelerator dropped out of the barrel. I was able to pop it right back in, but is this normal, or should it fit tighter into the barrel assembly? This may be a dumb question, but I have never owned an automag before, and just want to know if it is normal.
I seem to recall hearing somebody else experiencing the same issue and having it fixed. It’s definitely not right. The accelerator is supposed to be retained by a pin, I think? In any case, call them and talk to them about it. For sure they will give you the straight scoop so you don’t need to rely on the word of folks like me, who don’t really have the answer. But please let us know what you learn!
@pantera-mike I called Rob and he informed me that it is normal on the new pistols, and does not affect function.

That sounds so odd to me. Although I acknowledge the new gun boasts a number of design changes from the old one. I would not characterize this one as an improvement only because it would be so easy to lose it.
So we spend multiple thousands of dollars on a firearm and there are parts that fall off it??
Does AutoMag plan on a fix or are they going to supply free accelerators ($95) when that part is lost or misplaced?
Be nice to read a response from the company as to what their game plan is for this issue!
There have been reports that some guns work just fine, without that part. At least in the original Automags. Just saying. Still, the part should stay put though. An oversized or tapered pin should fix it.
While I am not familiar with the accelerator on this particular gun, it doesn’t appear to be a design flaw in the new automag. The accelerators that I have worked with in machine guns are made to come out fairly easily so they can be cleaned and lubed. I would say if you take a gun apart and you loose a part that is on you. And maybe you shouldn’t be taking it apart if that is above your skill level. If you take it apart on an organized bench I don’t see how the part would be lost.
The accelerator just sits in position loose by design. It is not pinned in, the accelerator block holds it in place and the block is attached to the barrel with a screw now.
Though not common, I have had several original AMP's through the years where the accelerator could slip out. Nothing harmed.
A Christmas present to myself I guess. 😀

Yes! I have a full auto Thompson M1 sub machine gun (manufactured in 1941 - purchased by my father in 1961 - and gifted to me by him) and the accelerator in my Thompson falls out (or is meant to come out just like you say) very very easily upon disassembly.
@softsounds I don't know ,but if buying a new gun or rifle and if on the way to or from shooting range and parts starting off.I think I would be kinda upset, unless I tore down and cleaned it and didn't do something right assembly it back together. But I would definitely reach out to the gun store or the manufacture before posting on the net and finding out if I did something wrong, then it would be nice now to post the problem online as to what caused the problem so others could be informed.
@hjsheppeard I was not the one that posted the original message regarding a part falling off a new $3,700 pistol. Was only asking what the manufacturer was going to say and/or to do rectify the problem if one exist!

The accelerator is an internal part and is part of the barrel/receiver assembly. The only time it can come loose is when you have removed the barrel to clean and lube it. Once the gun is fully assembled, the part is completely trapped in the place where it does it's job.
It is not going to fall off at the range or going to or coming from the range. It can only happen when the pistol is field stripped for maintenance.
Good to know since I purchased two AutoMags
