How to inspect vintage Auto Mag?

I just purchased an El Monte 44 Auto Mag Model 180 off of GunBroker. It apparently only had one owner and his son inherited/sold it. It was upgraded by Lee Jurras and comes with paperwork, indicating 11 different modifications and test firing. The ad states the gun is in mechanically working condition.

Could someone please recommend an inspection checklist that I could do at my FFL before accepting possession? Any advice on weak points that could be broken or too worn to allow safe functioning, would be greatly appreciated. Pictures would be helpful, as well.

Thanks

A fellow named Yoshi Ishiguro was a bit of an Auto Mag guru and he published a comprehensive Auto Mag buyer’s guide, with lots of illustrations if things you do NOT want.

I also have a Lee Jurras-modified gun, although mine came with no documentation. I would be VERY interested in seeing what came with yours. I will PM you niw in the hopes you can share a copy.

Thanks!

It seems there is no provision for private messaging. Would you mind posting the Jurras modifications info here?  Thanks!

Thanks for the link

Here is a copy of the modifications done by Lee Jurras. There is also an invoice and hand written letter with the Lee Jurras letterhead but they are both only partially visible in the photos available on GunBroker. I’ll post them after I receive the gun.

The invoice indicates the purchase of a box of 180 gr loaded ammo from Lee Jurras and the lot includes some loaded ammo. The pictures don’t show the top of the yellow ammo box they are in. I’m hoping they are Lee Jurras Super Vel. Those would be cool to have.

FYI, it looks like the above link was archived without the photos (at least they wouldn’t come up on my phone). Using the article name, I was able to find a copy with the photos here (scroll down to the auto mag pistol buyer’s guide):

If you could provide very clear images of each document, that would be great.

As this forum is concerned exclusively with the current production guns, it would be beneficial and see a much larger audience if it was posted on the original Auto Mag forum, located here:

Thanks!
