Finally received my Automag on January the 2nd and was very pleased with the gun and the finish I chose. Their have been several problems that have plagued me with my new gun. First the bolt is a beast to pull back and requires a good grip just to pull it back. I have a pair of shooting gloves ordered and hope this will help with such. The second issue that has arised is that my gun's bolt would not lock back on the magazine without pressing up on the bolt latch. Finally today I was able to fire my Automag only 8 times. The first three rounds were 21.5 grains loads which fired good, but my bolt would not lock back on the last round. After examining my gun for a good 40 minutes and reading the instructions again I forgot that my gun came with an extra magazine. I carefully examined both magazines and saw several differences. The first difference that was noticed was one magazine had no cut to reduce the stress on the weld the other one did. The second biggest thing I noticed was the the tab that pushes on the bolt latch where two totally different measurements.

Here is the second magazine measurement of the tab.

Good luck with your purchase. I purchased a Ravin which was shipped after about 4-5 months. It looked great! I could not get 3 rounds thru it at a time. Sent back for rework. It came back 2 weeks later. Same thing. Jambs stovepipes etc. This is by far the WORST pistol I own. 4k and this is complete junk. I put it back in the box and shoved it under the cabinet. I also at the same time ordered an 8 1/2 inch polished with wood box. I canceled it after getting this dog. I was told it would be 90 days for a refund, I said okay and called my credit card co and disputed the charge and got my refund in 2 days. I want nothing to do with Automag. I also have 2 vintage automags that work great. I hope you guys get better pieces than what was shipped to me. 4k is big money to me and I worked hard for it. I can always use it for a nail hammer.

That’s totally ridiculous. You absolutely deserve to have a gun that runs flawlessly. Auto Mag either needs to repair it or replace it. It does nobody any good to have you shove it under your cabinet and just sulk about it. Also, Auto Mag deserves to be able to ensure you are satisfied, which they can’t do as long as it’s under your cabinet.

Send it back.

FWIW I have a Kimber that had to make three trips back to the mother ship for a variety of problems, and is now flawless. It happens.

@pantera-mike Didn't mean to hijack this thread but I did talk to Mr. Henery about the problems I was having but he never even offered to cover the cost of shipping. $75.00 each way. He didn't seem to care to much and I was pretty turned off. I was told it takes 200-300 rounds to get broke in. What crap. SBR ammo at $65.00 a box. I was able to isolate the problem to the bolt. The ejector was only moving about .035 from the face of the bolt. The reason for being stuck was the pin that holds it from popping out. The pin is a stepped pin. The pin hole was drilled off center about .020 from the counter bore causing the ejector to be bound. The bolt needs to have both hole and counter bore on the same axis to allow the pin to seat down and allow the ejector to work freely and push the shell out the port. I ground off the side of the pin on one side so it would free the ejector and I'm sure it will work but to be honest I've lost interest in the Raven. Out of the approximately 200 firearms I own this the worst service and piece of equipment I have in my vault. I purchased an Ohio Ordance BAR 1918. The bipod had a problem I sent the bipod back and received a new one in 4 days no questions asked. That's service!

Good luck to all who have waited to get an AutoMag and I wish you all the best.

I was originally intending to make a quick update to confirm that my issues have been fixed, but I realized a lot has happened the past few months and perhaps giving the full story would be a good idea.

I was having some trouble getting in contact with the AM team after ranging my gun and seeing the poor performance. After reading the advice on the forum I ordered an Automag magazine from Triple K, thinking since the factory mag had broken it must have been the source of the issues. Well, for anyone else thinking they should go in the Ku Klux Kagazine Triple K direction, DON'T. The mag was egregiously overpriced at $58, and when it arrived it looked like some shit an 8th grader made in shop class out of scrap sheet metal. Needless to say, it didn't even fit properly in my gun and I wasn't about to try to ram it in there to make it cycle. The mags seem to be designed for fitment with the original Pasadena Automags; as discussed earlier on this thread, the magazine dimensions and tolerances are NOT the same on the new guns. Even so, the quality was just appalling for the asking price. Thankfully they were receptive to my complaints about the quality and provided a refund, so they score some brownie points there.

Eventually (February of this year) I was able to make contact with Rob and, through him, the head gunsmith at Automag to get a prognosis going. Over a conference call he discovered the case extractor had been blown clean out of the bolt somehow, and we set up an RMA to get it replaced. Since the gun will almost always fail to feed without the extractor actuating properly, it must have leapt out of the gun after only a few rounds since that was all it took to start jamming consistently. However, that dimple is real small and the pin holding in the bolt is even smaller so I never even saw it leave, or that it was missing until I got the gun on a vise. I also told him about the bolt failing to stay open when an empty mag is removed, and he made note to file down the bolt hold open as well. It took about 2 months from start to finish for the service to take place with very little communication during the process, but we should all be used to that given the size of their team. Through repeated calls to Rob's desk I was able to confirm that they will service both the case extractor and bolt hold open, and replace the mangled magazine.

Eventually, in April of this year, I did get it back... right in time for my favorite range to be closed for the season for a renovation. Thanks to the amazing status of the MI DNR website, I wasn't able to find out until I'd already made the trip out there. After some looking, I found another range with RSOs that don't have cleft assholes and took the multiple hour trip to finally range my newly serviced gun properly. The range in question, for any mitten enjoyers here, is in Ortonville and I can confirm the RSOs there are less annoying. Cost to enter is also dirt cheap and they have lanes out to 200 yards (with an Automag? Hold my beer), and the 6 round load limit is only somewhat annoying with a gun that only holds 7.

And... She shoots! I put about 100 rounds of SBR 180gr through my Raven and it only jammed twice, failed to fully cycle once. The bolt hold open also works properly now too. It felt like I was spending more time chatting it up with the other range-goers though, this thing REALLY turns heads when it spits fire in a 4 foot cone. Maybe the real Automag is the friends we made along the way?

Only gun-related issue now is the fact that the factory gun case is just junk. It got knocked a little bit by Dropkick Express in transit and now it barely closes, so I'm getting a Pelican hardwall case and making some custom foam for all the bits. Curious if y'all have any issues with the factory case, or if I just got unlucky.

So, TL;DR?

  • Bolt hold open was several thou out of tolerance, but is not something one can service in their garage with a drill press.
  • Case extractor and retaining pin took a trip into the next dimension, and needed replacement. Make sure yours is still captured after ranging!
  • Feed failures caused magazine to get shredded
  • Triple K mags aren't worth your time, you're better off learning to become a machinist and making your own
  • Gun is awesome when it works and makes friends faster than any dime

Proof bolt hold open works
