10-4 on that, just planning ahead if my backorder for the Starline brass doesn't come through, I have been backordered there for over a year now. The .308 angle sounds good, I'll try that next. Thanks!

Honestly, with the high price of components these days, I think you are almost better off starting with loaded SBR ammo and salvaging the brass from that. That’s how I started out. I did the math and the cost of buying brass + primers (when they were only $35 per 1000, remember these days?) + powder + bullets was almost as much as buying loaded ammo. Once you have the ammo, then you have the brass, and of course your costs go down by reloading. But it’s rarely the best option to start out buying all raw components.
I have completely given up reloading 9mm because I can’t load a full box for less than the $15.99 it costs to buy it. Instead I save those components for other calibers where ammo is either expensive or unavailable (like 38 Super).
I recently started shooting 7.62x25 Tokarev and even though the factory brass-cased ammo was expensive, it was cheaper than buying all the components including brass. I have a formidable brass catcher and I never let an empty get away! 😁
@bob-cohee Bob I had that issue. Once I started using standard large pistol the world came right. I am fairly lucky I did not scrap the wildey. Blue dot burns to fast for magnum primers.

The taper on a .308 sizing die is different than a 44 AMP, it is more straight.
A 30-06 or 270 die will work though.

Bob,
Ah, excellent, thanks for the correction! I knew they were slightly different but because those other two are longer I assumed they had less taper, not more. Now that you mention it, a friend has reported great success using his 270 die for sizing so I’m sure you are correct.
Thanks again!
This just popped up on Gunbroker. 310 rounds with a starting bid of $425 which works out to $1.38 per round. It’s a bit steep but perhaps the seller would lower his starting bid if he got no other offers?
@pantera-mike Thanks, guys. I picked up some 30-06 dies, no more slippage with the.429 projectiles!
All—I stopped by the Auto Mag booth at the NRA Indy show Sunday and thanked them for supporting us. I have recently placed an order for 500 rounds of 44 AMP brass which is backordered. I asked them how they operate and what I can expect in terms of a delivery date.
They said they make brass in batches and typically wait until they have a certain order threshold before scheduling a batch for production. The fact that they are allowing people to place orders is supposedly a good sign—it indicates that production should begin in the relatively near future. Obviously the more orders they get the sooner they will reach their target value to start production.
I asked him what might be a reasonable expectation for 44 AMP and he couldn’t really commit, but suggested the fact they are available to order suggests they might be produced within the next 12 months, 18 at the outside.
@pantera-mike you ordered brass directly from AutoMag (vs Starline)? Maybe I’m misunderstanding but I wasn’t even aware that one could order brass directly from AutoMag.

Sorry fingers got ahead of my brain.
I meant to say I went to the STARLINE booth to talk about Auto Mag brass with them. Auto Mag wasn’t at the show. I placed my order with Starline, not Auto Mag.
I actually tried to buy once-fired brass from Auto Mag last week, figuring they must be swimming in the stuff, but they turned me down cold. Perhaps they are reselling back to SBR and using that brass over and over for their test-firing etc? That would be wise. I would hope it isn’t just being scrapped. They wouldn’t tell me where it’s going….
@pantera-mike I have had 500 on backorder for well over a year now.
If everybody else was like you and me, and placed orders for brass, we would all get our brass in no time! 😁
I was looking at Matt's Bullets to see what's new and noticed a cast bullet that might work in my 44. It's from a Saeco Mold (#431) and weighs 255 grains. I ordered a few hundred to try. If they don't work, I can always use them in my Marlin 44 Magnum.
